This session is for anyone new to treating Gambling Disorder or for anyone interested in hearing cases of clinical treatment. The session will provide education on a problem gambling-related topic that matches the case to be discussed. A certified gambling counselor, and graduate of the Ohio Gambling Treatment Fellowship Program, will present a case and discuss screening tools, assessment and treatment strategies, similarities and differences between gambling and substance addictions and walk the audience through what a clinical encounter looks like. The session will conclude with an engaging discussion.

International Center for Responsible Gambling Free Webinar: The Power of Language in Addiction Treatment and Responsible Gambling

Does stigmatizing language cause drop-out from addiction treatment? Does it keep gamblers from taking advantage of responsible gambling (RG) tools?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine has led the way in proposing non- stigmatizing language for use by treatment professionals. Similarly, researchers working on Positive Play, a responsible gambling approach, have proposed changes in the language and concepts of RG. This session will provide treatment providers and responsible gambling professionals guidance on how to improve communication with clients and gamblers.

Prevention Stage II: Strategies in Preventing Problem Gambling

This Stage II is intended for prevention professionals and builds upon the basic concepts from Stage I and provides participants the opportunity to apply community-based prevention skills to problem gambling issues in their communities.

Prevention Stage II: Strategies in Preventing Gambling Disorder builds upon the basic concepts from Stage I: Gambling, Problem Gambling, and Ohio’s Service System and provides participants the opportunity to apply community-based prevention skills to problem gambling issues in their communities. The training will provide a cursory overview of the history of prevention and problem gambling prevention in Ohio including funding sources, strategies, and collaboration with partners in operation and regulation.

Participants will examine local data to establish a problem of practice for problem gambling prevention and determine what resources currently exist in their communities to address the problem. Participants will engage in independent work, breakout rooms, and large group discussions to examine organizational policies, community policies, and school policies and create guidance to advocate for change.

Who Should Attend:
Professionals in the fields of prevention and education; county boards; and anyone wanting to learn more about problem gambling prevention.

Lead Trainer: Claire Spada, OCPS, ICPS
Claire is the Workforce Development Program Manager for PGNO and an Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist. She has worked in the prevention field for over 15 years which has included a focus on substance use and problem gambling prevention across the lifespan. In a previous role, Claire coordinated gambling services for a community agency and was effective in developing screening procedures, providing awareness and education to counselors and clients, integrating problem gambling into drug and alcohol prevention, as well as ensuring that her agency was well prepared to address gambling disorder.

Treatment Stage II: Applications and Approaches in Treating Gambling Disorder

Stage II builds on the Stage I training, aimed at conceptualization, treatment planning, and treatment delivery for those presenting with problem gambling and gambling disorder.

This training builds on Stage I: Gambling, Problem Gambling and Ohio’s Service System and is aimed at conceptualization, treatment planning, and treatment delivery for those presenting with problem gambling and gambling disorder. Best practice models of care for gambling issues will be reviewed, specifically highlighting Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness-Based Interventions. The training will be interactive, with large and small group exercises aimed at increasing competencies for gambling treatment.

Prerequisite: Stage I: Gambling, Problem Gambling, and Ohio’s Service System or 12 hours of previous gambling counseling training required

Learning Objectives:
• Participants will learn assessment tools and protocols designed specifically for gambling treatment
• Participants will learn culturally sensitive treatment protocols designed for treating gambling and reducing gambling harm
• Participants will review potential ethical dilemmas when working with clients presenting with gambling issues

Lead Trainer: Dr. Heather Chapman, Ph.D., ICGC-II, BACC
Dr. Chapman is the Director of the Brecksville Gambling Treatment Program and Deputy Director of the Veterans Addiction Recovery Center at the Cleveland VA Medical Center as well as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. Working with problem gambling for over 20 years, she is an internationally certified gambling counselor/board-approved clinical consultant from the International Gambling Certification Board of the NCPG. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and as such has developed groups specifically designed to enhance change for those struggling with problem and disordered gambling. Additionally, Dr. Chapman has been elected to the National Council on Problem Gambling Board, starting July 2022.

The Ohio Supervision & Consultation Virtual Meeting will provide 1.5 hours of Gambling Disorder treatment supervision to Ohio clinicians. The virtual meeting will engage participants in a lively discussion around current gambling expansion, legislation, data, and other related topics with Ohio experts.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Gambling Disorder Treatment Professionals

Attendees can receive 1.5 hours of the 4 hours of supervision required for the:
– GAMB Endorsement through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board
– Gambling scope of practice through the Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board
– ICGC Certification through the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board

PREREQUISITE:
Current caseload and submission of one question at registration to be asked during the meeting. In order to receive supervision credit, there is an expectation of full participation throughout the meeting. It is an expectation that attendee webcams will be turned on through the duration of the times in-session.
