Stage I provides 12 CEUs of gambling-specific education that will increase participants’ knowledge of gambling and gambling expansion, risks and warning signs, and co-morbidities of problem gambling.

Stage I provides 12 CEUs of gambling-specific education that will increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of the current climate of gambling and gambling expansion, problem gambling risks and warning signs, at-risk populations, and co-morbidities of problem gambling with substance abuse and mental illness. Furthermore, this training also discusses new and emerging trends in gambling and gaming, legislative updates and how to work with and engage your agency, board, and community.

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize current trends and data specific to Ohio’s gambling landscape
• Learn the risks and warning signs of problematic gambling
• Understand co-morbidities of gambling addiction, substance abuse, and mental illness
• Become familiar with screening tools to identify gambling addiction
• Learn about how to integrate gambling prevention and treatment into agencies, boards, and communities

Who Should Attend:
Professionals in the fields of assessment, prevention, treatment, policy, education; county boards; community members; recovery advocates; partners in operation and regulation; and anyone wanting to learn more about gambling and Ohio’s service system.

Continuing Education:
12.0 CEUs are available for this training which can be used toward obtaining the GAMB Endorsement through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board or can prove scope of competency through the Ohio Social Worker, Counselor, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board. Problem Gambling Network of Ohio is an approved continuing education provider through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board, the Ohio Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board, and the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board.

Schedule:
This virtual training will run each day from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM ET with a 1-hour break from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Each day will consist of 4 hours of content totaling 12 hours.

Lead Trainers: Claire Spada, OCPS, ICPS & Abdullah Mahmood, LSW, LCDCIII-GAMBp, OCPSA
Claire is the Workforce Development Program Manager for PGNO and an Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist. She has worked in the prevention field for over 15 years which has included a focus on substance use and problem gambling prevention across the lifespan. In a previous role, Claire coordinated gambling services for a community agency and was effective in developing screening procedures, providing awareness and education to counselors and clients, integrating problem gambling into drug and alcohol prevention, as well as ensuring that her agency was well prepared to address gambling disorder.
Abdullah is the Program Coordinator for PGNO. He has counseled individuals with substance use disorders, opioid use disorders, and gambling disorders. He has experience in direct care as well as in prevention. He has worked with many different client populations from adolescents, adults, to minority communities. In his current role, Abdullah supports individuals getting their gambling endorsement, facilitates training, and answers daytime warm transfer calls through the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline.

Stage II: Applications and Approaches in Treating Gambling Disorder @ Virtual Event

Stage II builds on the Stage I training, aimed at conceptualization, treatment planning, and treatment delivery for those presenting with problem gambling and gambling disorder.

This training builds on Stage I: Gambling, Problem Gambling and Ohio’s Service System and is aimed at conceptualization, treatment planning, and treatment delivery for those presenting with problem gambling and gambling disorder. Best practice models of care for gambling issues will be reviewed, specifically highlighting Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness-Based Interventions. The training will be interactive, with large and small group exercises aimed at increasing competencies for gambling treatment.

Prerequisite: Stage I: Gambling, Problem Gambling, and Ohio’s Service System or 12 hours of previous gambling counseling training required

Learning Objectives:
• Participants will learn assessment tools and protocols designed specifically for gambling treatment
• Participants will learn culturally sensitive treatment protocols designed for treating gambling and reducing gambling harm
• Participants will review potential ethical dilemmas when working with clients presenting with gambling issues

Lead Trainer: Dr. Heather Chapman, Ph.D., ICGC-II, BACC
Dr. Chapman is the Director of the Brecksville Gambling Treatment Program and Deputy Director of the Veterans Addiction Recovery Center at the Cleveland VA Medical Center as well as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. Working with problem gambling for over 20 years, she is an internationally certified gambling counselor/board-approved clinical consultant from the International Gambling Certification Board of the NCPG. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and as such has developed groups specifically designed to enhance change for those struggling with problem and disordered gambling. Additionally, Dr. Chapman has been elected to the National Council on Problem Gambling Board, starting July 2022.

Stage III: Introduction to the Roles of Family & Finances in Treating Gambling Disorder is a training that encompasses education on two components of treating gambling disorder.

Clinicians seeking to provide treatment for gambling disorders may find themselves addressing areas unique to problem gambling, such as financial management or the impact family members can have on recovery. This training serves as an introduction to navigating those two components of treating gambling disorder.

Continuing Education:
6.0 CEUs are available for this training which can be used toward obtaining the GAMB Endorsement through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board or can prove scope of competency through the Ohio Social Worker, Counselor, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board. Problem Gambling Network of Ohio is an approved continuing education provider through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board, the Ohio Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board, and the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board.

Lead Trainer: Nan Frank’s, M.A., LPC-S, LICDC-CS
Nan has worked in community and behavioral health for over 40 years. Her professional work has focused on addictive illness and its effect on individuals, families and community. She was a co-founder of a model of rapid response to overdose survivors referred to as the Quick Response Team (QRT) model. Her clinical service expertise includes family counseling, recovery support and intervention. She has provided training all over the country focused on addiction, families, counseling skills, trauma and codependency. She is a Ramsey Solutions Certified Financial Coach and helps everyday people manage finances and create wealth. In addition, she has authored three books on professional ethics for behavioral health service providers. Ms. Franks has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Kalamazoo College and a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Cincinnati. She is trained in the Johnson Institute, Love First, Arise, and CRAFT approaches to intervention. She continues to enjoy learning and expanding her understanding of community problems and solutions. She is a graduate of the Ohio Problem Gambling Fellowship and the Advanced Fellowship.
